Hour Log and Description:

                     08/28/12  6 hours:
I met her at her house, where we started with Photoshop basics.          Once the basics were covered I learned about the program flash and how it works with animation. Starting with a simple bounding ball to copying a moving clip. At the end of the day in my Photoshop, I was able to make two eyes blink. One a simple eye outline and the other a coloured in eye.

                    09/04/12 4 hours:
We again met at her house and we couldn't work with my Photoshop since my laptop is unable to charge, so instead we were using a Maya 2013 demo version (a video game program) on her computer. Maya is hard to learn and has many features. Within the 4 hours I learned the basics of how to make shapes and towards the end I was learning how to make characters, starting with the face (as far as we were able to get). Even for what I learned about Maya, I have to say that it is a hard program that I still don't understand a lot about.

Total Hours: 10 Hours and 0 mins
Questions:

  • How many different programs do game makers use?
  •  For different types of games do the designers use different programs? Like is one type of game easier made on one program, while another type less easier on the same program.
  • Do they make all the components from scratch or do they have reference?

  Important Gained:
I gained that with making video games it takes a lot of time, patience, and to be diligent. I think that is the most important, because it shows that it is not a simple job and that the patience to put up with the time and to have the diligent to have to repeat many variables with little change. I know that when I was doing the eye animations, I would get tired of have to repeat and with the second eye I tried to "cut corners" only to have to eye mess up within the animation when played ( The bottom eyelash would disappear early) and I once I saw the mess up the only way to fix it would be to start the animation from the beginning.

   My Topic:

The topic I was thinking of was along the lines of video games, like making horror or how they have evolved over time. My service learning help to show the modern way of making video games, as well as the basic view of have any type of game is started and formed. No matter where you go the basics are the key.
